Birthday boy Anu Malik worried, Bollywood copying Pak music
New Delhi: With a career spanning almost three decades and many awards to his credit, as Anu Malik turned 47th today, the music composer expressed concern over the present state of Bollywood music rueing blatant copying of foreign tunes by today`s musicians.
Malik, who is known for his music in blockbusters like, `Main Hoon Na`, `Border`, `Refugee` to name a few is sad over the present state of music in Indian cinema.
“Melody is lacking in today`s music and I am trying my level best to get that back. The songs which we hear today do not have any life. We still love to listen to the old classics because they had soul,” Malik told reporters.
“It is the age of laptops and Internet where people are lifting foreign songs especially from Pakistani music. With such blatant copying the composers are killing Indian music,” he added.
“We don`t have those kind of composers and lyricists (like those in the olden times) today and I think that audiences are realising this fact. This is why audience is getting bored of today`s music which is nothing but noise,” the composer said.
Malik started his career in 1980`s by working in `Ek Jaan Hai Hum`, `Sohni Mahiwal` and `Ganga Jamuna Saraswati` but success evaded the musician during his early years.
The composer got recognition in the industry with the success of films like `Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayi`, `Janam` and `Sir`, which were appreciated both by audience and critics alike.
Malik was awarded with his first filmfare trophy for best music in Shahrukh Khan, Kajol starrer ‘Baazigar’ in 1994.
“I had to work very hard to be where I am today. The whole journey has been a struggle with its ups and downs. But it is with constant ‘Sadhna’ of music that I have tasted success.
And of course it is the love of my listeners who have played a huge role,” the composer said.
After ‘Baazigar’, there was no looking back for Malik who gave hits like ‘Border’, ‘Refugee’, ‘LOC: Kargil’, ‘Fiza’ and ‘Main Hoon Na’. Whether it was ‘Sandese Aate Hai’ or ‘Tumhe Jo Mene Dekha’, Malik was able to strike a chord with the audience.
The music composer also won National award for his music in JP Dutta’s ‘Refugee’ which had memorable songs like ‘Panchee Nadiya Pawan Ke Jhonke’ and ‘Aisa Lagta Hai’.
Malik, who is credited for giving singers like Sonu Nigam and Alisha Chinay to the music industry, is of the view that today Bollywood has turned into song churning factory but
hopes that it will change in the near future.
“Times will soon change as the audience is becoming aware. I am trying to work towards it and give my listeners a feel of the good old melody,” he added.
And as Malik, son of legendary music composer Sardar Malik, ushers in his 47th birthday, he said, “According to me this is just the beginning. I am still learning music and have lots to do. Whatever I have achieved is by the grace of God but I still have this dream to take my father’s legacy forward.”
Malik is currently composing for Farah Khan’s ‘Happy New Year’ which stars superstar Shah Rukh Khan.
