You think playing your instrument is all there is to it. Well if you’ve been reading this, you know that, that isn’t true.

Mastering your instrument definitely is central to anything else you do as a musician, but here are a few ways to play out your talent and actually implement what you’ve learned in smart ways.

COMPOSE: Sounds hard, and yes, it is. But if you know some basic music theory, you can start composing. Experiment with your instrument, start creating music. I found out this way that composing wasn’t for me, but I had to do it to find out!
PERFORM: Get as many concert opportunities as you can. Especially as a beginner, getting to grips with stage fright and dealing with an audience is all a matter of experience. Later, you can start being more selective, but for starters, try playing at the local old age home. They love musicians. You might even get a small pay.
JOIN GROUPS: Play chamber music or in a band, sign up for your local big band or orchestra, just get out there. Playing with others is like a whole new world of challenges, and you’ll notice.
Spend time with your instrument: By this I don’t mean simple practice. Get to know the workings of your instruments, maybe look for a new one when you think you’re ready (or have the cash). Guitarist could experiment with strings, violinists should learn about how their sound is produced etc.
DIVERSIFY: Even if you hate Ska-Punk, try venturing there with your instrument. I found some musical styles a lot of fun to play, while I never liked to listen to them. It’s an exciting way to experience new music.
LISTEN TO MUSIC: It get’s forgotten much to often, but passively absorbing music is far more important than actually playing. If you can listen to friends playing, go to local concerts or just hang out with your favorite tunes in the den, you will inevitably absorb their vibe. IT will inspire and educate you.
MUSICAL DIET: Be strict and focused about what you play when. Unless you follow a straightforward practice regime like a Weight Watchers diet, you won’t get anywhere.
