PMR Interview: Komal Rizvi Opens Heart on Tu Beh Gaya
Komal Rizvi has bagged the credit of having her video Tu Beh Gaya as Azaan Sami Khan’s directorial debut. Tu Beh Gaya is a wonderful video with never-seen-before contemporary dance moves choreographed by Komal’s talented brother Hasan Rizvi … PMR caught up with Komal Rizvi to hear her excitedly share all about her latest release Tu Beh Gaya.

Komal Rizvi: I am extremely proud of everyone in my team and truly glad that I worked with the people that were part of this project!

Azaan, Mo, Hasan, Saad, Maheen, Beenish, YBQ, etc. Really awesome and talented bunch!

PMR: Wow!! You sure seem to be super excited, do share the background of this single with your fans Komal. How did you come up with the concept of the song and the video?

Komal: Saad and I were just casually jamming in Mumbai one day and we came up with this tune … I vowed to record it and do it’s music video but then I got busy with my tour in the USA and it just kept getting delayed. Better late than never though, I say!

PMR: The Sufi number you did in Coke Studio have received a lot of praise. So how did you decide to do a song of a totally different genre this time?

Komal: Coke Studio is a different platform. It promotes our cultural treasures like lambi judai and lal meri path. My personal songs are just that! … Personal. I like experimenting with a wide range of genres because that’s who I am!

PMR: The video is different, and has a lovely concept. Who came up with the idea of inviting Azaan Sami Khan to direct the video, and why him specifically?

Komal: I asked him of course and he loved the song and in turn I loved his concept.
I just had a gut feeling that he would be perfect for this project 🙂

PMR: Tu Beh Gaya visually has a lovely concept. Despite being complicated, Tu Beh Gaya is shot in a way that sends the message across. Did you get skeptical about the concept initially that audiences might not get what you are trying to say through the video?

Komal: We all wanted the video to remain artistic and abstract. And even though we knew what story we were trying to tell we also wanted each audience member to take away their own interpretation from it as well.

PMR: Ali Kazmi made is presence felt in Tu Beh Gaya. What was the experience of working with Ali Kazmi like?

Komal: Absolutely awesome. He is comfortable to work with. Very friendly and yet very professional. And of course talented. The ideal combo.

PMR: Tu Beh Gaya has some never-seen-before contemporary dance moves choreographed by your talented brother Hasan Rizvi. What kind of a relationship do you have with your brother Hasan  on a professional level? Do disagreements ever get complicated as you both are also siblings?

Komal: (laughing) Hasan is such a perfectionist. On the other hand, I must say so am I. There are times when we tend to not see eye to eye, but we make sure to stay out of each other’s way by realising that each is an expert of sorts in their own fields and both of us trust each other. Hasan doesn’t say much when it come to music and singing. Hence he wins hands down when it comes to any choreography based debates!

PMR: What are your upcoming plans in terms of music? What can your fans expect from you next?

Komal: Another song hopefully really soon … Also something very different.

PMR: What message would you like to share for the readers of PMR?

Komal: Keep loving and supporting our most awesome Pakistani music and artists! Wohoo!

PMR: We always wonder what you being a singer yourself have in your playlist. Could you please share a playlist of your top 10 all-time favorite Pakistani songs?

Komal: That would be really hard as I have so many favourites. All songs by Reshma, most Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan numbers and Abiba Parveen songs. Some old folk and Sufi tunes. A few pop songs by the golden Alamgir, Junoon and Vital Signs of course!
