OVERVIEW
More than 15 million people are affected by Pakistan’s worst flooding in 80 years, with at least 1,600 fatalities, according to estimates from the government of Pakistan. While the severity of their needs has not yet been fully assessed, the number is greater than those who were affected by the 2005 South Asia tsunami (5 million), the 2005 South Asia earthquake (3 million), or the 2010 Haiti earthquake (3 million). The estimate of 290,000 homes destroyed or seriously damaged is almost the same as those destroyed in Haiti. Below are organizations that are working on relief and recovery in the region.

As if being a huge success in Pakistan, India and desi communities across the world weren’t enough, Atif recently touched another milestone by collaborating with popular American rock band, Guns N’ Roses, a gig he landed through Todd Chea, who has been a fan since he heard Atif sing while driving up North a few years back. Instep Today considered it essential to get in touch with the pop icon regarding the project details. And that’s not all; Atif shared with us his candid thoughts on various music related subjects such as his collaborative video with Strings, the new season of Coke Studio, singers getting into acting, his most memorable recent gigs and his highly anticipated movie debut, Bol.

Instep Today: Enlighten us about your collaboration with Guns N’ Roses? How did it happen?

Atif Aslam: I got a call from Todd Chea and he was telling me about how he had heard my song while driving up North a long time ago when he was helping the earthquake victims and shared his experiences of what he thinks about the beautiful people of Pakistan. I was amazed at his dedication for work and love for Pakistan as an American. When he spoke to me about this project where the Americans can see the real Pakistan by peace through music, I didn’t even give it a second thought. He introduced me to the great musician/producer, Mr Lanny Cordola and while I was on the tour, I recorded a song with the respected Matt Sorum and Gilby Clarke (ex-members of Guns n’ Roses) and my band mates Sarmad Ghafoor and Sameer Shami.

IT: Please share with us the basic details of the project.

Atif Aslam: It’s about how the Americans should see a brighter side of Pakistan which they haven’t seen. This is why it’s called peace through music. The point of teaming up with American musicians was that there was no better way than music to let people from both the sides know what each thinks about the other. It’s not just going to be single song; it will be a documentary, a DVD that’ll include the backstage footage of the performances, studio shoots, etc. We will come up with new seasons every year.

While Yash Rah Films banner has plans to sign Ali Zafar for three of its forthcoming films, the actor is not even sure about the first project with Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan as co-stars.

“The announcement, if it came from the production house, is premature. I have not signed the film. I have not signed any film after Tere Bin Laden. I have not even met producer Aditya Chopra or director Ali Abbas Zafar. Yes, we’ve spoken about the film and I’ve liked my role (but) we’ll meet when I come to Mumbai this week,” Zafar said.

“The director narrated the script to me on Skype, all our communication so far has been virtual. I like the sound of the role. It is in the comic space. I guess they thought of me for the part because of my comic timing in Tere Bin Laden,” he added.

The pop star was asked if he was aware that the role was apparently offered to Riteish Deshmukh? In response Zafar said he wasn’t aware of the role’s past, but is determined not to play supporting roles.

KARACHI: Strings, Sabri Brothers and Arif Lohar are doing telethons to raise funds for the flood victims. Ali Zafar is going through the details of doing shows to collect aids. Salman Ahmad is reprising his early hit as a flood song to motivate people. All these and many more.

When Pakistan is facing the worst natural disaster in its history, many music icons of the country are actively participating to assuage the sufferers.

While some music celebrities are donating funds and urging their fans to give generously for the rehabilitation of flood survivors, a few singers are out in the field to provide relief marked by their personal presence.

After moving through the affected areas to provide relief to the sufferers, Atif Aslam is motivated enough to set up his own humanitarian organisation. After visiting Charsadda, Aslam has plans to go to other disaster locations. Talking to The Express Tribune about his recent activities regarding the flood relief, Aslam said,

“I am certainly now planning to open up an NGO. We have visited Charsadda, we are going to move to Muzaffargarh. A visit to Swat is even being planned out.”

Earlier this week, Shehzad Roy was also in Balochistan where after having an aerial view of the submerged areas, he launched camps to distribute relief to the victims.

Abrarul Haq is currently on a relief mission , along with his family members. The family is visiting different flood-affected areas like Nowshera and Muzaffargarh.

Other than providing the relief items, the group has been doing iftars with them.  “I’m taking my family along to lift the spirit of people out there,” Haq told Daily Express. The singer who is also raising funds for the campaign said, “Every single rupee donated is being provided to the sufferers. We do not believe in making a show of our humanitarian work.” Talking about Sahara Trust, he said, “The organisation is a bridge between the victims and the people who can afford to help them. We’re trying to raise as much funds as possible.”

Though not in the affected areas, Hadiqa Kiani, in collaboration with the Pakistan Army, has been listing down the most imported items needed by the flood victims and was spotted buying these items in bulk. Kiani went on to take personal care of the items by preparing relief boxes, carrying gifts along with the necessary stuff.

The singer also marked her presence when the donations collected from her fans and associates were being loaded by the army officials.
